As another remarkable school year comes to a close, we are proud to celebrate several TEA students who will spend part of their summer pursuing highly competitive academic and leadership opportunities across the country. These programs are designed for students with exceptional curiosity, initiative, and potential, and admission often requires extensive applications, essays, recommendations, interviews, and demonstrated academic achievement.
Sophomores Aaron Drury and Hope Maranda were selected as part of a cohort of just 35 students nationwide for the Emerging Rural Leaders Program, a collaboration between the University of Chicago and the University of Southern California. Through lectures, discussions, projects, and mentorship, they will explore leadership, entrepreneurship, behavioral science, and economic development while learning how to address challenges facing rural communities.
Junior Abbie Caufield was selected as a Junior Herpetologist participant for the International Herpetological Symposium in New Mexico. Her application included a 1,500-word essay, cover letter, and recommendations highlighting her passion for conservation and natural history. The program provides young scientists the opportunity to learn directly from leading herpetologists and connect with peers who share a love of reptiles, amphibians, and environmental stewardship.
Junior Emmett Osborne was admitted to COSMOS at the University of California, San Diego, one of California's most selective STEM summer programs. Emmett will participate in an intensive four-week residential program focused on biodiesel and renewable resources, working alongside faculty, researchers, and fellow students in advanced laboratory and research settings.
These opportunities reflect both the hard work and dedication of our students, as well as the confidence to pursue ambitious goals beyond the classroom. We congratulate Aaron, Hope, Abbie, and Emmett and look forward to hearing about their experiences when they return in the fall.
