Student Support at TEA

At Tahoe Expedition Academy, we recognize that every student learns differently. Our Student Support Team works closely with each learner to develop strategies that promote academic success, personal well-being, and a love of learning. Some students with diagnosed learning differences may benefit from additional support and accommodations, while others may need opportunities to stretch and deepen their academic growth. We aim to nurture each student’s individual goals and strengths. Ultimately, our mission is to empower students to understand how they learn best, advocate for themselves, and be well-prepared for future learning and life beyond high school.

The Student Support and Success Team meets once a week to discuss academic and emotional concerns as they arise. The Team consists of the Dean of Students, Learning Support Coordinators, Learning Specialist, School Counselors, Individualized Adventure Coordinator and HS Academic, College and Career Counselor.

Our Lower School Student Support team is committed to ensuring that every child receives the academic support they need to thrive. We begin by administering benchmark assessments to help teachers better understand each student’s skills and areas for growth. These data-driven insights guide classroom instruction and help us identify students who may benefit from additional support. If assessment data suggest a need, we begin interventions immediately ensuring no time is lost in providing help. We use high-quality assessment and intervention tools, along with additional research-backed programs.

Our highly collaborative team provides a combination of push-in and pull-out academic interventions, primarily focused on reading and math. Students receiving support are closely monitored through ongoing progress checks, and their goals are continually reviewed and adjusted to meet their evolving needs.

Additionally, all K-1 learners currently receive targeted, small-group instruction from our team of interventionists, teachers and support teachers—a model that has proven highly effective, as demonstrated by strong student growth data.

We also work closely with the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District (TTUSD) to provide ISPs (Individualized Student Plans), which are similar to IEPs for students who qualify through testing. TEA aligns with, and often exceeds, the support offered by the district by providing small-group instruction, classroom accommodations, and regular consultation with the district-assigned case manager. However, while we work with private providers, we do not provide speech or occupational therapy.

Our robust and responsive Student Support program reflects our commitment to meeting every student where they are and helping them reach their full potential.

At the Upper School, we are dedicated to providing students with the resources they need to succeed academically and personally. We offer push-in and pull-out support services, with our Learning Support Coordinator, on an as-needed basis to ensure students receive targeted assistance within and beyond the classroom. In addition, our Learning Support Coordinator carefully reviews neuropsychological evaluations to determine appropriate classroom accommodations, ensuring that each student has the tools they need to thrive in their academic journey.

At the Middle School level, we screen students three times a year using the Renaissance Star Test to assess academic progress and identify areas where additional support may be needed. This data helps us tailor interventions and provide individualized learning strategies to support student growth. Furthermore, 6th grade students in our bridge program receive proactive organizational support and metacognitive executive functioning instruction through our Learning and the Brain course.

We are committed to supporting the whole child through our counseling program. Our on-campus counseling services provide individualized and small group support tailored to meet the unique needs of each student. In alignment with our character education program, we also deliver developmentally appropriate classroom lessons that foster emotional intelligence, resilience, and empathy.

Our counseling team works collaboratively with teachers, crew leaders, families, and staff to proactively promote students' emotional wellness, helping them thrive both academically and personally. When needed, we partner with external mental health professionals to ensure students receive consistent, high-quality care beyond the classroom.

In addition to direct services, counselors and crew leaders intentionally design programming and experiences that cultivate self-awareness, social responsibility, and positive relationships—foundational skills for lifelong well-being and success.

TEA HS College and Career Counseling Info

Our HS Academic, College and Career counseling has been designed with all students in mind. Our goal is to assist all families and students in post-high school planning. Most students will apply directly to four-year institutions, but some might choose to take a GAP year, go straight to work, or start at community college. We can provide individualized attention to students through their time at TEA to prepare for life after high school, whatever their chosen path.
