How This Year's Schedule Is Working, One Week In

Dear TEA Families,

We are one week into our redesigned weekly schedule, and here is what families should know.

Flex Friday Had a Strong Start
Our first Flex Friday went well! Lower school students played cross-grade outdoor games, and Middle and High School students returned from fieldwork with exciting stories to tell.

Schedule Shifts This Year: The How and the Why
  • Lower School has added a dedicated math block alongside its already-strong literacy circles, while project work continues to connect humanities and science to real-world experts
  • Middle and High School blocks are now 80 minutes, Monday through Thursday. Total instruction per subject stays at four hours weekly, the same as last year, now with room for our "inch-wide, mile-deep" project work to actually unfold
  • MS and HS Crew now meets 30 minutes every day, five days a week, which equates to an extra hour every week. This is TEA's daily touchpoint: one or two adults who know your students well, holding academic support, portfolio work, executive functioning and mentorship in a consistent, structured rhythm
  • The new Fridays schedule gives faculty dedicated time for committee work, as research shows that teacher collaboration centered on student work strengthens instruction

Ask your student how each subject is going this week, and reach out any time if you'd like to walk through your student's specific schedule.

Warmly,
Jessa “Ms.J”
Head of School

Back-to-School Nights: Lower School is Tonight!

Back-to-School Nights begin tonight with our Lower School families! These evenings give parents and caregivers a chance to step into their student’s school experience, meet teachers, visit classrooms, and get a closer look at the learning ahead this year.

Lower School | TONIGHT, September 8 at 5:30 p.m.
We’ll begin with a short presentation in Building One (B1), followed by time in classrooms for Crew presentations and conversation with teachers.

Upper School | Tuesday, September 15 at 5:30 p.m.
Next week, Upper School parents and caregivers will gather in Building One before following their student’s bell schedule, moving from class to class to meet teachers and learn more about each course.

Upper School families, please bring a laptop! You’ll use it throughout the evening to access your student’s schedule in real time and view course overviews.

Flex Friday — Tell Us Your Plans!
Please let us know your student's plans for this Friday by the end of day Wednesday.
Students staying for the afternoon will participate in movement, adventure, and activity stations, study hall, leadership opportunities, and other rotating experiences. Students will have some flexibility to move between activities throughout the afternoon.

A reminder about Friday Pick-Up Locations
12:30pm PICK UP → LOWER SCHOOL FOR ALL STUDENTS

3:15 PM PICKUP → NORMAL LOCATIONS

A Warm TEA Welcome to the Emblom Castro Family!

We are excited to welcome the Emblom Castro family to the TEA communiTEA! Jenny Emblom and Frank Castro are the parents of Gabriella Castro, who is beginning her Middle School journey as a 6th grader this year.

Adventure, curiosity, kindness, and connection are important to the Emblom Castro family, whether they’re spending time together, exploring the outdoors, or traveling somewhere new.

Gabriella is an avid learner with interests that span theater, music, skiing, surfing, travel, and the outdoors. As she settles into life in Truckee, she is especially excited to make new friends, embrace new experiences, and discover new interests along the way.

The whole family is looking forward to getting to know fellow TEA families and becoming part of the Hawk community.

Welcome to TEA, Emblom Castro family! We’re so glad you’re here!

TAP Needs You!

Hello from Your TAP President!

We just had our first TAP meeting of the year, and it was well attended and amazing! We had the opportunity for Q&A sessions with both our Head of School, Jessa, and TEA Board member Mia Poirier. We also discussed plans for staff gifting and our staff pantry and received an enrollment update from Courtenay.

We filled our Treasurer role, which is very exciting! We are still looking for a Secretary, so if you’re interested in joining our awesome team, please reach out.

Tomorrow evening is the New Parent Social at Martis Camp! Please let your Room Parent know if you are attending. All parents and caregivers are welcome, and we hope to see you there!

Did you know that you are already a member of TAP? There are so many ways to get involved, whether you have time to help with an event, lend a hand with a project, or share a professional skill or hobby. We’re still looking for parent and caregiver volunteers for the year ahead, and we’d love to know how you’d like to participate.

Please take a few minutes to complete our volunteer survey. No commitment is too big or too small!

And, of course, come to one of our meetings or events and get to know us

Next TAP Meeting: Monday, October 12 at 8:45 a.m. at the Truckee Airport.
Volunteer at TEA!
