3rd-Graders Visit Truckee Humane Society to Learn About Project RUFF
For their fall Learning Expedition, our 3rd-Grade Crew is examining learning challenges kids face both near and far.
For their fall Learning Expedition, our 3rd-Grade Crew is examining learning challenges kids face both near and far. As part of their expedition, the students have been traveling to non-profits in the Truckee area to learn how they are helping kids work through their learning challenges. So for this field study, the students went to the Humane Society in Truckee to interview Erin Ellis who created the RUFF project (Read Up For Fun). Learn more about it here.
Through the RUFF project, service dogs and their handlers travel to different schools in the Truckee area to read one on one with kids who may need reading support. The students learned that needing reading support doesn’t necessarily mean that someone can’t read, it could also mean that their confidence is low or their comprehension needs work.

Throughout their experience, our students got to see how the RUFF project helps students work through these learning differences. The students got to meet two of the handlers and dogs, which was great.

They talked about the challenges they have. The kids learned how funding is a challenge and what “funding” is. Kids learned that it’s good to donate to programs that you believe in, because they need the support to keep doing what they are doing!
