5th Graders Visit Grow Dome to Study Sustainability, Renewable Energy and Green Building

During the visit to the Grow Dome students began to look at sustainability with an emphasis on the human ecological footprint of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

This semester our “Consumption Presumption” learning expedition provides students the opportunity to investigate the impact humans have within the Tahoe Basin and the world. Field studies, like our recent to the Truckee Grow Dome, solidify their understanding of sustainability, ecological footprints, alternative energy, energy efficiency, and green building processes within our local environment.

Through out this expedition students will have the opportunity to meet with many experts in the field of sustainability and green building. Susie Sutphin, Founder/Executive Director of Tahoe Food Hub andFarm Manager for the Truckee Grow Dome was the expert we worked with on this field study. For more about Susie read this recent story on her by Tahoe Weekly.

Learning Targets of the “Consumption Presumption” expedition include:

  • I can discuss how the energy we get from food, and the energy we use to produce products, was once energy from the sun.
  • I can discuss different types of renewable energy technologies available to us.
  • I can understand the role and impact on the environment of different renewable energy technologies.
  • I can discuss what it means to be energy efficient.
  • I can evaluate the green and energy efficient technologies that are now being used in green building within the Lake Tahoe Basin.
