Blackwood Crew Pays Tribute: Veteran’s Guest House

As part of their service learning project the Blackwood Crew is developing a relationship with the Veterans Guest House, a local non profit in Reno. As part of their service learning project the Blackwood Crew is developing a relationship with the Veterans Guest House, a local non profit in Reno. The Blackwood Crew visited the Veterans Guest House with arms full of food that they had prepared, as well as the Veteran Affairs hospital where they gifted the Veterans hand crafted cards that they had made. The Crew is also visiting USCG Station Tahoe, have a trip to NAS Fallon set up through a Naval Lt Cmdr, and a trip to the Nevada State Legislature. All of these trips are an in-depth way to ensure that their learning is tangible and forever memorable.

Crew leader Matt Morrison noted that, “Cathy and Linda of the Veterans Guest House were impressed with our Crew, were we too. It was not an easy thing going into the Veteran Affairs hospital and interacting with strangers, but the Crew carried themselves with dignity to everyone they spoke to. One poignant moment was when we had the chance to meet Bill, who is a US Navy veteran recovering from a stroke. He is in the long term care ward, but when he saw the kids, his eyes lit up and he started shaking our hands one by one. When I overheard him thanking some crew members and those crew members in turn saying ‘No. Thank you!’ I was at a loss for words.”

Matt continued by noting that “the Veterans Guest House is better off tonight for the delicious food that was provided and many veterans are comforted in the fact that they were honored and recognized by a crew of 11 5th graders.”

Cyrus Johnson, a dad at TEA stated, “Bravo Matt, Blackwood Crew, and TEA. Such a worthy, appropriate “issue.” Such a gift for our children to give to those who have given so much. Keep it up!”
